SUSTAINABILITY AND COMMITMENT TO THE ENVIRONMENT

SUSTAINABILITY

The flora, and fauna of Yucatán have always been PALOMA VAN DEN AKKER’S main inspiration, and each piece comes to life through natural materials and ancestral techniques. Our pieces come from the earth, worked with the magical hands that only an expert craftsman can have. We focus on a sustainable work process, with responsibility, ethics and decent treatment and spaces for workers in the community.

We team up with two groups of artisans: artisans in our workshop who are experts in
embroidering and manipulating henequen; and artisans who work from home, in
rural areas of Yucatán, where they can continue taking care of their homes and families. They are experts and have dedicated their entire lives to this beautiful work, their knowledge was passed on from generation to generation, and their creativity helps us develop our bags and accessories.

Our team is a fundamental piece in this project, so giving them excellent working
conditions is a priority.  All are paid on the national minimum wage and the worker's labor rights are respected; There is no child labor or human trafficking in the production of the collection, and we comply with all local health and safety regulations.

We produce through small collections to avoid waste, in addition to using handmade techniques. Among these techniques are: backstrap loom weaving, henequen weaving, jipijapa weaving, embroidery, cross-stitch embroidery, macramé and crochet.

Materials such as henequen are important because, in addition to being local, producing it does not generate waste and is used to the maximum.

Taking care of the planet is in our hands.
